Salad Story

Over the coming weeks we will be building a ‘Salad Story’ following the lifecycle of a Cos/Romaine crop from planning through to harvest and delivery.

Cos, due to its excellent eating qualities, is driving growth within the salad market.  Traditionally it has been a tricky crop to grow well, being a fast growing, sweet crop.

 Planning

Over the last 5 years great strides have been taken in the quality of crop due to varietal development.  During the cooler Spring and Autumn more European types are grown that can cope with the colder, wetter conditions and during the middle of the Summer more Californian types are grown that can cope with extremes of heat.

To that end we will be following the growth cycle of a Cos/Romaine variety called Frisco that has been selected due to its tolerance to tip burn, good head weights and sweet crispy flavour.  As we go to press the seed will be being purchased ready for use.
